The Glass Room

Project Details

The room was beautiful and slightly cold: pale stone, full-height glazing, and a two-storey volume that no piece of furniture could soften. A living plant here would have scorched by July and dropped leaves onto the timber floor by winter.

We drew a scheme around a single slender specimen tree set against the glass, its canopy scaled to break the height without blocking the view, underplanted with layered foliage that reads as convincingly alive from the sofa a few steps away. Colour was chosen to stay rich against strong backlight rather than washing out. The room now feels planted and settled, and asks nothing of the owners.

Project Outcomes

A cold, over-scaled living room now reads as a warm, planted space that holds its look year round, with no watering above the timber floor and no seasonal decline.

Project Scope List

  • Site visit and light study against the west-facing glazing

  • Bespoke specimen tree, scaled to the double-height volume

  • Layered underplanting chosen to read as real at close range

  • Planters matched to the room's stone and timber palette

  • Delivery and single-afternoon installation

Project Added Value

  • No scorching or leaf drop despite strong afternoon sun

  • Zero watering risk above a timber floor

  • The full-height view kept open, not screened

  • A finished look on day one that stays identical for years
